Entry This year sees another amazing international field of elite athletes competing for the major prize of $10,000. Cooks Gardens, Wanganui, is open to all ages during the day for you to set your personal best mile by either walking or running. Secondary schools will show their talent in a series of relay races followed by celebrity and elite races held well into the evening. The inaugural Mayoral Mile attracted the finest mile field from around the world in 2006, all challenged with the opportunity to beat the time set by legendary elite athlete Sir Peter Snell. In 1962 Sir Peter Snell broke the world mile record on this very track in a, then, record time of 3:54.4 minutes. The 2007 Mayoral Mile saw Englishman Andrew Baddeley take 1 st place in a time of 3:58.81 closely followed by Kiwi Gareth Hyett and Australian Mitch Kealey. There are also celebrity mile races, a mile featuring real mayors, and shorter races for toddlers including the 'Toddler Twenties'. Join us on February 16 for another spectacular day. Complete a mile yourself - running, jogging or walking - and then sit down and witness thrilling racing from some of Australasia's finest athletes.Process for Registration on the Day People wishing to participate in the Mayoral Mile are required to register on the day. The registration area will be situated in the grassed area to the left when entering Cooks Gardens from the Maria Place Extension entrance.
