Mayoral Mile – Saturday, 16 February 2008

The Mayoral Mile is the premier athletic event on the New Zealand calendar.

But it is much more than that – it is also a mass participation event that provides the opportunity for everyone to complete a realisable, physical goal. To run a mile at the same venue where the legendary Peter Snell broke the world mile record in 1962.

This combination of elite and everyman events is unique in Australasia.

All ages run during the day with the aim being to set their personal best. For some, just completing the distance is a triumph in itself. All participants go into a draw with prizes ranging from international air travel to furniture!

Last year, Englishman Andrew Baddeley took the gold medal in a time of 3:58.81 closely followed by Kiwi Gareth Hyett and Australian Mitch Kealey.

There are also celebrity mile races, a mile featuring real mayors, and shorter races for toddlers including the ‘Toddler Twenties’.

Join us on February 16 for another spectacular day. Complete a mile yourself – running, jogging or walking – and then sit down and witness thrilling racing from some of Australasia’s finest athletes.
